Immigrant visas

An immigrant visa is required of anyone who wishes to enter the United States to reside there permanently.
The filing of an immigrant visa petition is also the initial step required to receive a Permanent Resident card (also known as a “green card”).

In most cases, you can only receive an immigrant visa if someone files an immigrant visa petition on your behalf. You cannot petition for your own immigrant visa, unless certain exceptions.

Family Based:

• Immediate Relatives: the spouse, widow(er), unmarried children under 21 and parents of a U.S. citizen who is 21 or older.

• Brothers and sisters and adult or married sons and daughters of U.S. citizens, or spouse of a U.S. permanent resident. There are numerical limitations to these categories of immigrants, meaning there will be a waiting period after your petition is approved and before you can apply for U.S. immigration.
