French-American Biotech Connection |
Wednesday, Apr 4, 2007 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
La Jolla
The Salk Institute
A comparison of two successful approaches to foster innovation in the life sciences
France and San Diego’s biotechnology industries have much more in common than one might think. In 2005, 174 biotech companies in San Diego (228 in France) were developing 50 compounds in Phase I trials (41 in France) and 58 in Phase II (39 in France). Both face similar challenges, such as facilitating technology transfer to industry or reducing the funding gap for translational research.
However, the drivers that have fueled their industrie's growth vary significantly. France possesses world-class pharmaceutical and chemical scientists coupled with some of the most advanced clinical trial facilities worldwide. San Diego’s tightly-connect network of angel investors, research institutions, incubators and biotech firms makes it arguably the best place to start a biotech company in the world.
Our distinguished panel will discuss the specific strengths of their regions, the common challenges both industries face, and will explore avenues for further collaboration between France and San Diego in the life sciences.
Program:
6:00 pm – Guests registration
6:30-7:00 pm – Discussion of San Diego's TCA network and of the French « Pôles de compétitivité »: a new collaborative mode funding collaborative project involving companies, start-ups and research centers

Past Event - Member Appreciation Day - Merguez and Rose |
On
Sunday May 21st, starting at 12 noon, the SDFACC Board will cook
"Merguez" (spicy sausages from North Africa) and serve chilled Rosé
wine at the Francophollies.
Of
course, being the SDFACC, those are not just any Merguez. They are
created specially for the Chamber by a butcher in Oceanside who spent
the last four years perfecting its creations. As good (and some say
even better) than those in France. Grilled on a barbecue, served on a
baguette with mustard and washed with chilled Rosé wine, your
membership at the Chamber would never have tasted so good.
If
you are not a member yet and consider joigning, c'mon in and join the
fun. A lifetime pledge to support l'OGC Nice will even get you a glass
of Rosé. If you are from Marseilles, or otherwise supporting l'OM,
please keep walking.
